Remaining relevant
On Wednesday June 18th, our Managing Partner, Antony had the pleasure of attending the CLA South East AGM at the beautiful Ascott House and Gardens in Buckinghamshire, a remarkable estate that welcomes over 45,000 visitors annually through its house and 300-acre garden, gifted to the National Trust in 1947. The house remains the personal residence of the family, exemplifying the balance between public access, heritage stewardship, and private legacy.
The setting was a fitting reminder of how rural estates have long adapted and diversified to remain relevant, resilient, and open to the public. The event provided a valuable opportunity to connect with fellow professionals Lucie Stone, Matthew A. and Giles Dobson.

Inheritance Tax and Rural Businesses
Gavin Lane of the CLA delivered an important update on current lobbying efforts, particularly around Inheritance Tax (IHT) and Business Property Relief (BPR). These areas are increasingly under scrutiny, with serious implications not just for traditional farming, but for the growing number of diversified rural businesses that rely on family ownership to plan and invest for the long term.
In a sector where asset-rich, cash-poor models are common, BPR plays a vital role in enabling succession, enterprise development, and long-term stewardship.
A thought-provoking and timely day. Thanks to CLA South East and Robert Honan MSc MRICS for their hard work.
